# How do I sign up for a volunteer shift?

> Taking a dated volunteer slot, what blocks a sign-up, reminders, and how to cancel.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * A **shift** is a dated slot with a capacity — bonspiel kitchen 9–1, bar duty Friday. You take one with **Sign up**; each shows **\{left} of \{capacity} spots left**.
  * Some shifts need a club certification (for example Smart Serve); the button then reads **Certification required** (or **Certification expired**).
  * You receive one reminder email about 24 hours before a shift that has a date and time.
</Note>

The **Volunteer** page (address `/volunteer`) lists **Open shifts** with the title, role, time (or **Time to be arranged**), location and description, shown with the club's formatting. **Sign up** confirms with *You're on: \{title}*; a shift you hold shows **Signed up**, and a full one shows **Full**.

To cancel, go to **My Account** → **Volunteer Hours**, where the **Volunteering** card lists your shifts with a **Cancel** button on upcoming ones. It confirms **Signup cancelled**.

What can stop a sign-up: **This shift is already full**, **This shift is in the past**, **You're already signed up for this shift**, **This role requires: …**, or **Your certification has expired: …**. You cannot cancel a shift that has already started or been marked worked — *contact the club*.

Shifts described in words only ("as needed, weekends in March") stay listed until the club removes them and get no reminder email.
