# How do I choose a membership type?

> The membership step: what is on sale, prices, and why some clubs will not let you continue without picking one.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Select a membership** (your club may name the step differently) lists the memberships your club offers at signup, in the club's order, as cards: **\{Group} — \{Type}**, its description (with the club's formatting) and its price. Click a card to pick it; click it again to clear it.
  * Some clubs require a membership: leaving it blank shows **You must select a membership type. Please retry.** Others let you continue to leagues without one, for example for a social or practice membership bought separately.
  * Early-bird pricing is not shown here; it appears as a discount line on the Confirm screen.
</Note>

Pick one and choose **Continue**; **Back** returns to your information. If you used CCM, this is the old **STEP 2 - Select a Membership Type** screen.

Some memberships, such as Honorary or Life, are kept off signup by the club and are assigned by staff instead, so they do not appear here.

If nothing is currently on sale you see **No memberships are on sale right now — continue to leagues.**

Some clubs sell memberships separately and require an active one before you can join a league. In that case the leagues step tells you: *Your membership has expired. You cannot register for or join a team in a league until you renew your membership.* with a **Renew your membership** button.

Clubs that enforce minimum volunteer hours check them when you renew — see [What are the minimum volunteer hours for renewal?](/members/volunteering/what-are-the-minimum-volunteer-hours-for-renewal).
