# How do shift reminders work?

> Who is reminded of a volunteer shift, when, and the notification rule that has to exist for the email to go out.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * A reminder is sent once per sign-up, to every confirmed volunteer on a **dated** shift starting within the next 24 hours. Described shifts ("Fridays after the 7pm draw") have no date, so they get no reminder.
  * The reminder goes out **only if your club has an active notification rule for the Volunteer Shift Reminder trigger**. No such rule is created for you. The rule editor is **Communication → Notifications**, available when a superadmin enables **Notification Rules** for your club — so a club that has never enabled that page sends no shift reminders.
  * To stop reminders, disable or delete that rule.
</Note>

Uplifter Curling checks for upcoming shifts every hour. For each confirmed sign-up on an open, dated shift in the next 24 hours it fires the **Volunteer Shift Reminder** trigger, once.

What arrives is the default **Volunteer Shift Reminder** template — subject "Reminder: \{shiftTitle} - \{shiftStart}", a body listing Shift, Role, Starts and Location, and an SMS version for clubs with SMS. You can customise the wording on the rule.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Check the rule exists">
    Go to **Communication → Notifications**. Look for a rule whose trigger is **Volunteer Shift Reminder**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create it if missing">
    Click **Add Notification Rule**, choose the **Volunteer Shift Reminder** trigger, set **Delivery Method** to **Send Email**, keep timing **Immediately** (the hourly job already decides when), choose recipients, adjust the template and click **Create Rule**. Make sure it is enabled.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If **Communication → Notifications** is not in your sidebar, ask your Uplifter contact to enable Notification Rules — or to create the rule for you.
