# What is the report builder?

> Build your own list report from a data source, chosen columns and filters, then save, download or schedule it.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * Found under **Reports → Report builder**, in the new view only. Needs the *View Financials* permission, and the builder is switched on platform-wide by Uplifter — if the page is missing, ask your Uplifter contact.
  * A report has one **Data source**; up to 40 columns and 20 filters.
  * **Download** appears only after the report is saved. Scheduling is done from **Saved reports**.
</Note>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose a data source">
    Click **New custom report**. Under **Data source** ("What should each row of the report be?") choose **Members**, **Program enrollments**, **Transactions**, **Invoices**, **Memberships**, **Policy acceptances** or **Programs**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick columns">
    Under **Columns** tick the fields to include. In **Selected columns** drag them into order and rename any header — "Order here = order in the report. Rename freely."
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add filters and preview">
    Click **Add filter** for each condition (for example a status equals a value, or a name contains text). The **Preview** shows the rows 100 at a time with a **Sort by** control and a row count.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Give it a **Name** and **Description**, choose whether it is **Shared with org**, and click **Save report**. **Download** then fetches the file, and the report appears under **Saved reports** where you can set a schedule.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Use the builder when a canned club report is close but not quite right — say, a member list with a custom set of profile columns — rather than exporting an extract and editing it by hand every week.
