# What is the difference between points and scores result modes?

> A league records each game either as points assigned (the CCM way) or as numeric scores; here is what each mode changes and where you set it.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * New leagues default to **Points assigned (win/loss/tie → configured points)**. Leagues created before the points engine existed were set to **Scores (numeric game scores)**.
  * In points mode the result dialog offers win / tie / default buttons only; typing a score or an end-by-end line is refused with "This league records results as points…".
  * You can change the mode at any time on **League Setup → Result entry**, even after results exist. Nothing stops you, so agree the mode before the season starts.
</Note>

**Points assigned** is how CCM worked: the scorer records who won (or a tie or a default), and each side is credited with the points from the league's points rules. The actual curling score is never stored. Standings are sums of those points.

**Scores** stores the numeric result of each game, and optionally an end-by-end line score with hammer. Standings still use points rules: each result's win, loss or tie is mapped through the grid (falling back to 2 / 0 / 1 if no row exists).

Set the mode with **Result entry mode** on the wizard's General step when you create the league, or later in the **Result entry** card on **League Setup** — it saves immediately, and switching to points shows "Results now record as points — make sure every round × division has a points row".

End-by-end scoring is only available in scores mode. **Show ends won** works in both modes and is entered separately from the score.
